Best Microwave Oven – Buying guide

Do you know which microwave suits best for your kitchen? In this guide, we will try to answer all the questions that anyone would have while buying a Microwave.

Types of Microwave oven

Let us here look at the different types of Microwave Ovens. The two types of Microwave ovens are Solo Microwave oven and Convection Microwave oven. The image below will help you understand the major features of these appliances.

How to choose the best microwave oven for your kitchen?

Selecting the right microwave to fit your needs can be a relatively simple process if you consider the following aspects:

1. Determine external size of the oven

To choose the right size. First, establish where you want to place this appliance and then the size of your kitchen counter.  Microwaves are usually ranging from 10x18x14 inches (25.4×45.7×35.6cm) (Height-Width-Depth) to 14x24x20 inches (35.6x61x50.8cm) (Height-Width-Depth). Look at the image below to better understand the dimensions.

Picture shows the external dimensions of a Microwave oven

We suggest you measure the dimensions of the space where you plan to place this appliance before you make the purchase.

2. Determine the internal capacity

Another important question to consider before purchasing is “How much food do you expect to be cooking?” The internal capacity of a microwave can be described in two ways. The Cubic capacity and volume capacity. The cubic capacity of a microwave can range from less than 1 cubic foot to over 2 cubic feet while the Volume capacity ranges from 15 liters to 35 liters.

Pictures shows the internal area of a Microwave oven

For convenience, we have mentioned these details for all products in the specification section.

3. Determine how fast you want to cook

Wattage is the key aspect here, a higher wattage in ovens typically cooks food faster and more evenly than lower wattage ovens. Larger microwave ovens usually offer a higher wattage (power) than smaller ovens. Anything over a 1,000 Watts can cook your food fast while below 700 Watts will cook slowly.

We have mentioned the Wattage information in product specification section.

What is a Magnetron?

Magnetron” is the combination of the words “magnetic” and “electron”. A microwave oven uses a magnetron to generate micro-wave energy.

The micro-wave energy travels through a waveguide and is distributed into the cavity where the food is cooked. The waves are absorbed by the food and excite water molecules in the food. This heat then transfers throughout the food and cooks it evenly.

A microwave oven is faster than a conventional oven because the microwaves can penetrate into the food and heat the food from the inside out. In a conventional oven, heat comes from the outside and slowly works its way into the food through standard slow heat transfer processes.

Difference between a traditional oven and a microwave oven

A microwave uses electromagnetic waves to generate heat and cook food. Whereas, an oven uses thermal heat for baking and roasting food.

A microwave takes much less time to cook as compared to a conventional oven. You do not need to preheat a microwave to cook, while an oven needs to be preheated. This particular reason also makes Microwaves more energy-efficient than conventional ovens.

Basically, electromagnetic radiations can be generated instantly as you switch on power supply in a microwave. Whereas an oven takes more energy and time for the coil to heat up.

Important features to look for in a Microwave oven.

There are many brands in the market offering a Microwave oven, but what features are important? What are the basics functions you need to have in a Microwave oven you purchase?

We will today list out a few features of the Microwave ovens available in our market.

Rotisserie:

This is one of our favorite features in this modern appliance. Rotisserie is a grille that can be used to make delicious barbeque dishes. Now make barbeque vegetables, paneer, and all the different meats at the comfort of your home.

Pre-heat:

Cooking foods like cake and pastries requires a preheated oven. This will not only consume a lot of time but also energy. Hence, a Pre-heat feature in this appliance is a very helpful function.

Automatic sensors:

This new technology can tell when your food is sufficiently cooked. This is possible by measuring steam in the oven and you don’t have to set a timer. The microwave automatically shuts off once the food is evenly cooked.

De-frosting:

The Defrost option unfreezes your food and eventually helps in cooking food evenly. Some models have delay start-time options or will keep food warm even after it cooks.

The advantage of this feature is that you can have the food straight out of the oven. The taste and flavor do not undergo any change.

Auto Menu:

An automatic menu basically means a number of preset programs for simpler preparation of certain dishes.

You just need to select the type of food along with a few more details, and the oven will automatically adjust the power and cooking time accordingly. It enables saving the process of preparing a dish and later recalling it by pressing a single button.

Childlock:

We have to be very careful with microwave ovens. There can be tremendous heat inside the appliance. Hence, some microwave ovens come with a child lock facility to protect your children from accidents. Child-proof doors can be locked and released using a keypad.

Interlock:

This safety feature Might not be visible readily but guarantees that the microwave oven will not run if the door opens. Most ovens have two interlocks while some have three. If one fails, the backup lock will surely work.
