W – WordPress

WordPress is an easy to use blogging platform started in 2003 to help bloggers, publishers, and businesses quickly publish, build, and maintain websites without having to hire any technical help to do it for them.

Do you know the difference between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

This is a picture showing the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org

Basically the .org is a free Content-Management-System (CMS) which powers blogs and websites (like rightpurchasing.com) and the .com is a hosting service that uses WordPress software to create a blog or website like I create and edit my content.

The costs involved to host a website involves a lot of variables, hence we might discuss it completely separate.

The two major tools to customize a blog with WordPress are its themes and the Plug-in. With these two tools, you can do almost everything on a WordPress website.

Themes:

A theme on this platform is a series of page templates used to alter the appearance of the blog/website. These themes help in changing the visuals of a WordPress website without having to code anything.

A varied theme option is one of the reasons people are drawn to a self-hosted WordPress.org blog. Do you know how many themes are available on WordPress now? Can’t guess? Its over 31,000 themes. Giving a plethora of options.

In-fact this platform now even gives the option for you to upload our own themes, giving a near-limitless potential with your blog’s visual appearance.

Plug-ins on WordPress:

A plugin is a piece of software you can upload, that contains functions you can add to your blog. They typically add more functionality or enable brand new features on your website.

In simple terms, it is like an add on or a tweak to your website. It’s incredible how a simple plug-in can tweak the smallest of details on your website to do new things and enable more features. Some Plug-ins that I use and recommend are,

Yoast SEO: One of the best plug-ins I’ve used which helps in creating content that ranks higher on SERPs. Note: We will be bringing our post for Yoast on 29th April.

Jetpack: This was created by WordPress and it helps with security, website performance, and traffic growth.

Instagram Feed: This lets you display your Instagram feed on your website. You can also see a demo for this in the sidebar on all of our pages. If you aren’t able to see it, Just scroll down a bit.

This platform is a very easy option for new bloggers as it gives ease and customizable options at the touch of a finger. However, it is also important to understand XML and XHTML.
